ANIMAL FARM

Animal Farm” is an allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945. According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War. The Soviet Union, he believed, had become a brutal dictatorship, built upon a cult of personality and enforced by a reign of terror. In a letter to Yvonne Davet, Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin (“un conte satirique contre Staline”), and in his essay “Why I Write” (1946), wrote that Animal Farm was the first book in which he tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, “to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole”. The original title was Animal Farm: A Fairy Story; U.S. publishers dropped the subtitle when it was published in 1946, and only one of the translations during Orwell’s lifetime kept it. Other titular variations include subtitles like “A Satire” and “A Contemporary Satire”. Orwell suggested the title Union des républiques socialistes animales for the French translation, which abbreviates to URSA, the Latin word for “bear”, a symbol of Russia. It also played on the French name of the Soviet Union, Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques. Orwell wrote the book between November 1943 and February 1944, when the UK was in its wartime alliance with the Soviet Union and the British people and intelligentsia held Stalin in high esteem, a phenomenon Orwell hated. The manuscript was initially rejected by a number of British and American publishers, including one of Orwell’s own, Victor Gollancz, which delayed its publication. It became a great commercial success when it did appear partly because international relations were transformed as the wartime alliance gave way to the Cold War.

I had never read this book before, but it sounds really good and interesting. I like the fact that he talks about the awful government of Stalin. George Orwell has an individual voice about this topics of the Russian Revolution. Everybody interested in history should read this book.

    • Mike says:

I read this book it is really interesting. I think it is not only for Russian history, or Stalinism, I think it fits for every dictatorship oe non democratic stats, Autoritatism for example for North Korea, Turkey etc…

      • Arthur says:

Well, it can be interpreted on this way, but in fact it’s a “particular war” Orwell fought against Stalinism, as Isaac Azimov said once. You can notice that the book shows some “pigs” which are not evil (however they still pigs). They reflect the images of Marx (who died in the beggining) and Trotsky (Who run away). They all pressuposes a “dictatorship of the proletariat”.

  2. Caleb Freeman says:

I got to read this book in my Language Arts class. It is amazing! I love the level of foreshadowing that Orwell puts in the book. It also is a great comparison to modern society, if you think about it.

  3. trey smith says:

me and my class have just now started reading this (7th) and i really enjoy the diverse type of literature that is is it makes me stuck to it wanting to read more would 100% recommend.

  4. Eddie sundqvist says:

The book impacted me and made me understand a bit about the Russian revolution. It is mostly about animals but the animals are like people. The different species have different equality like the people in real life. I think the book is a classic because it is a timeless story about the russian revolution. The issue in the book is that all animals aren’t equally valuable. In the end of the book pigs get the most value. Because the pigs are better like when the pigs eat with the people. The relevance of the book depends on the reader. A young person does not care as much as an older reader. So the value is higher for someone who is 40 y/o than for me.The allegory in the book is pretty well done. The book publishers have thought about everything so you understand that the book is about the revolution even if the characters are animals.Napoleon and snowball and the rest of the pigs think that they have earned most and best food. most apples and grass from the orchard. The pigs took grass and apples from the other animals because pigs was brainworkers and needed it.

  5. Viktor says:

The book made me understand how the communism revolution turned out, and how scary it is that people can take control like that. Animal farm is a classic because it’s relevant of it’s time.
The issue with animalism is that it is supposed to be based on that all animals are equal, but the pigs agreed that they needed the milk and apples because of their health and brainworking, they even claimed that it “has been proven by science”. So it’s pretty obvious that the pigs don’t think that every animal is equal. I think the book is still relevant today because we still have dictators so it may be good to keep that in mind, that people can use others to take power.
The allegory is constructed very well and the characters are done well and you understand who they represent. I think the message of the book is that people will continue to use the weak people that need help, to take the power. I think that you should read this book because it shows in a good way how the revolution happened.

  6. Alfons Bergman says:

Just finished reading this book in my English class and it really had an impact on me.
It showed me how the events leading to the russian revolution and the Stalinist era in a more fun way I should say, and even How the Stalinism really worked. Anyway, I think everyone should read this book at some point in their life because it has some strong points when it comes to being a classic, because it’s still relevant to this day. I see a lot of comments being made in 2020 and only that is a strong point by itself. And also how the animals can be turned into real life characters.

Something that annoys me is how the pigs keep on saying that all animals are equal, when there’s plenty of scenes in the book that prove different. Like the one where the animals start complaining about the pigs getting more apple and milk than the rest of the farm. And the pigs got together and held a speech to clear things up, Squealer says that it is proven by science that pigs need to eat milk and apples to preserve their health and that they don’t even like to eat milk and apples. How can a pig even say that something is proven by science?

And that’s what makes this book relevant today. It shows us the cruelty of dictatorships just like in North Korea for example.

The allegory of the book is done very well, just like i said before.. It shows us the cruelty of dictatorship. And it does it very good by showing the rise of one, and also how it builds up towards the ending and of course… the ending.

  7. Amet says:

I read the book twice in Bahasa Indonesia, and I’d love to read in English version. One of my fav book!

  8. Thun Thun Lwin says:

I feel like I’m in a theater watching the musical than just normally reading a novel!Orwell’s a very talented writer: the style he used was exciting! Thank you for the E-Book.

  9. Elda says:

Amazing novel! I´ve been using it in my classes for ages, and every time I read it again, find it even more fascinating than before. My students love it, and has a great impact on them when, eventually, they are able to connect the historical background and context the story deals with.
